First Semester Reflections

As I finish my first semester of the Humber Professional Writing and Communications Program, I realize I have come to know so much more about the world of professional writing than I did at the beginning of the program.

In September, I was unsure of what I wanted to explore and pursue in professional writing and wanted to be exposed to as many different styles of writing as possible. I also wanted to learn to optimize my writing processes in a way that would benefit the work that I currently do.

I knew that I enjoyed freelancing before the program, but after learning even more about it in class, I know for a fact that it’s for me.

I’m thankful for my instructors for their endless encouragement and being given the opportunity to write assignments in a variety of different writing styles and for a number of different audiences. From a portfolio and explainer article to caption writing and more, I’m grateful that I’ve been exposed to so much.

This blend of styles has allowed me to learn what I prefer and how to sharpen my techniques–including writing with brevity and concision. I’ve learned to use the techniques required in certain mediums and apply them to others. I have also learned to be a storyteller above all else and include precise details in all my writing to make it as engaging as possible.

This is something I continue to strive towards and keep at the top of my mind when writing anything. I know now how critical specific details are when it comes to effectively communicating a message. Proper details can turn a story that’s bland and unconvincing into one that is appealing and interesting to read, something that extends to all areas of writing.

As I look toward the second semester, I am grateful for everything I’ve learned since September and look forward to expanding on it in January.
